Rates of overweight and obesity in the United States have grown to epidemic proportions over the last 20 years. In 1988, the Surgeon General estimated that one-fourth of American adults were overweight, while the latest government data indicates that approximately 61 percent of adults are either overweight or obese.

Most health professionals believe that the more overweight an individual is, the higher risk he or she is to experience health problems. By losing even 10 percent body weight, an overweight individual can improve his or her health if the weight loss is maintained.

The increase in childhood obesity is especially alarming because overweight children are more likely to become overweight or obese adults, therefore, at greater risk for associated health problems. In fact, 60 percent of overweight children ages 5 to 10 already have at least one risk factor for heart disease. One in every four children is now classified as either overweight or at risk for overweight.

Physiological consequences of overweight and obesity can range from non-fatal effects that impact quality of life (e.g., respiratory problems, joint discomfort, infertility) to conditions that put an individual at risk for premature death. Among these conditions are Type II diabetes, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, orthopedic problems, high blood pressure and gallbladder disease. There is also data implicating obesity as a factor in the development of certain cancers.

Healthy lifestyles and weight management can be achieved, however, with regular, moderate physical activity and good eating habits. Parents should serve as role models to their children to instill and reinforce healthy lifestyles based on variety, balance and moderation.

Slimmer Image Weight Loss Clinics are here to help you with your weight loss needs. Because people are different, our counselors work one-on-one with each individual.
